The Power of Laughter (& Dance)
One of the moments in “Our Lady of 121st Street” that really resonated with me was the bar scene with Norca, Inez, and Sonia. Norca and Inez were sitting at a table together talking about “the past” for lack of a better term. Norca repeatedly told Inez how funny she was and always has been. Meanwhile, Inez is reflecting on darker moments (i.e. Norca sleeping with her ex husband). When Inez kept reminding Norca about the bad stuff, Norca finally snaps and yells something along the lines of “I just want to laugh. I don’t want to get into all that”, basically saying that she’d rather laugh than deal with the hardships. Read more…
