Brandon’s Choice

In the film Boys Don’t Cry, Brandon faces a dilemma, one of many, during the court hearing scene.  He could either stay to face the charges in front of him, or leave for Falls City (irony or  foreshadowing in the name?) to presumably, continue his relationship with Lana.  Both paths present a great deal of danger or worry for Brandon.  He faces serious criminal charges if he faces the judge, but at the same time, being with Lana only increases the likelihood that his “true” identity will be discovered.  Which consequence did/should he fear more? Did Brandon make the correct choice?  What choice would you make?
