Book Suggestion
After reading both articles by James Davis: “Conflicting Rules” and “The Rule Becomes Firm”, I am reminded of a book I read freshmen year entitled The Kindred. This book is about the story of a woman who travels back in time to the time of slavery.
Her first time traveling back, she saves a white young man who is the son of a plantation owner. She is then allowed to stay with the family as a house slave.
Although the book has the science fiction theme to it, the story examines the relationship of the plantation owner’s child and one of the slaves. The many issues that are involved due to both of their statuses allows for an interesting outlook to the relationship which involves miscegenation. The slave rejects the child who loves her deeply. He reaction with anger constantly highlights their social class difference and his power over her.
Just thought I suggest it for anyone who is interested. I enjoyed the book a lot.
